Why even talk about bad workplace behaviors?
You already know this, but in the workplace, professional behaviors are crucial for maintaining a positive and respectful work environment. This means you have to be mindful of your appearance, your interactions with colleagues, and the overall workplace culture. Demonstrating professionalism helps you build trust and credibility, and fosters a sense of inclusivity among your team members.
Essential Skills for Workplace Success
Professionalism in the workplace is a need, not a want. It’s essential for success in navigating various work-related challenges. You’ll enhance your professional reputation and contribute effectively to the team when you
Avoid dismissive behavior,
Stop apologizing for your ideas, and
Are honest with job applicants.
These skills are non-negotiable for fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment.
Don’t Forget About the Power of a Professional Appearance
This is an icky topic but we have to say it: there’s power in a professional appearance. And, it extends beyond clothing and grooming! “A professional appearance” now includes your behavior and communication in the workplace. Presenting oneself professionally signals respect for oneself, colleagues, and the organization. It sets the tone for interactions, instills confidence, and positively influences professional relationships and opportunities.
And, for the record, natural hair, braids, and no makeup are completely acceptable in the workplace.
So what are these "bad behaviors"?
Saying, “We'll get back to you in a few days" to job applicants. Job applicants need a job. Honestly, if you aren't actually going to get back to them in a few days, don't even offer a timeline.
Perpetuating microaggressions: This can be as simple as scheduling events on major holidays for faiths other than Christianity or demanding that a reserved coworker speak aloud in a meeting rather than inviting them to share.
Apologizing for your ideas: Stop saying “This might be a bad idea…” or “This sounds stupid but…” When you do this, you are literally telling your colleagues that you don’t trust yourself… why should they?
