Just for Moms: 5 Ways to Manage Your Energy Like a Pro

How to Manage Your Energy as a Mom: Expert Tips from TULA Life Balanced

Between snack emergencies and the ‘second shift’ of mom life, your energy is constantly on E. This week, TULA Life Balanced’s Debra Doliner shares science-backed hacks to recharge—because literally ‘touching grass’ and 8-minute friend calls might just save your sanity.

What You Get From This Episode

  1. Energy ≠ Time

    • Physical energy ≠ mental energy. Example: "I can’t throw a Frisbee right now, but I can play a game."

    • Hack: Front-load mentally taxing tasks when your brain is fresh (or after coffee kicks in).

  2. Hydration is a Superpower

    • Just 2% dehydration slows brain function. Your emotional support water bottle isn’t optional—it’s survival gear.

  3. The 8-Minute Energy Boost

    • Call a hype friend for 8 mins (Simon Sinek-approved!). Just get it off your chest!

  4. “Touch Grass” Literally

    • Bare feet on grass = instant mood boost. Yes, even if your neighbor side-eyes you.

  5. Breathing for Energy

    • Inhale 80%, pause, inhale 20%, exhale = calm. Reverse it = energy.

Managing Your Energy: Self-Care for Moms Who Are Running on Empty (And Room-Temp Coffee)

I chatted with Debra Doliner (Austin Head of Marketing for TULA Life Balanced) about how to manage your energy when adulting feels like an Olympic sport. Because between work, parenting, and that ‘second shift’ of laundry/meals/homework battles, most of us are operating on fumes.

The “Second Shift” Struggle is Real

TULA’s mission to “shift the second shift” hits home for every mom who’s ever:

  • Pretended to poop just for 5 minutes of quiet

  • Felt rage bubble up when asked “What’s for dinner?” (Answer: “Cereal…”)

Debra puts it perfectly: “Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s survival.”

Energy ≠ Magic (But These Hacks Help)

1) Your Brain Has Office Hours

Debra’s mental energy tanks at 1–3 PM. Caitlin’s ADHD meds crash at 5 PM—juuuust in time for the ‘witching hour’—cool, cool.

  • Try this: Schedule demanding tasks during your peak focus times. Save folding fitted sheets for your zombie hours.

2) Hydration Is Your Secret Weapon

Your emotional support water bottle isn’t just cute—it’s critical infrastructure!

Just 2% dehydration slows down your brain function. And severe dehydration can shrink your brain’s volume by 5%. So drink up unless you want toddler logic to sound reasonable.

3) The 8-Minute Lifeline

Sometimes, the best thing to do is just get “it”—whatever “it” is that is draining your attention and energy—off your chest. Simon Sinek recommends an 8-minute check-in with your best hype friend.

  • I recommend asking if that friend has the bandwidth to listen to you venting (chances are likely that they’ll say yes, but it’s kind to ask!).

  • Friend can’t do it? Vent to your dog, or do what I’ve done in the past: record a voice note of you venting. Get it all out. And play it back later or share it with your friend when they’re available.

4) Touch Grass (Literally)

Fun fact: The kids are right; you do need to go touch grass. Bare feet on grass = instant mood boost. Debra plans to use her neighbor’s front lawn… and I can’t wait to find out how that goes!

5) Breathe Like a Yoga Influencer

Inhale 80%, pause, inhale 20%, exhale = calm. Reverse it = energy. Check out Yoga With Tim for good yoga and helpful breathing techniques, and as Debra notes, “He’s easy on the eyes too.”
